One of the most profound differences between this generation and their ancestors is the fact that this generation has 24/7 access to an infinite assortment of video content featuring lavish bestiality and genital mutilation, not to mention beheadings and executions. This is all part of the ever growing world that we call the internet. It is a portal that can be transcended via the touch of a screen that we carry in our pockets everywhere we go. For sure, the internet provides us with an ever growing list of benefits, but could it also be supplying us with an abundance of malign content too?
A recent trip to the local pub exposed me to something that I had not yet seen before. At one point in the evening a gentleman presented the latest On-Demand video to a crowd of eager spectators. I fixed my eyes onto the screen of his smartphone and thought to myself what could it be this time? Hopefully not another one of those goat videos! The action began rolling, and no, it wasn’t another one of those goat videos. This time it was a sex tape between man and snake. As I watched man and snake copulate together, I wondered if there are any limits at all to what the internet has on offer.
Superstar serial killer Ted Bundy confessed to being a hardcore porn addict in his final interview (it is available on YouTube!) just moments prior to his execution. As he opens up he proclaims that a toxic addiction to extremely hardcore porn was one of the key ingredients that inspired some of his brutalities. Bundy says that his addiction to porn started with softcore material and over time he graduated towards the more extreme violent pornography. In his own words; “Once you become addicted to it, and I look at this as a kind of addiction, you look for more potent, more explicit, more graphic kinds of material. Like an addiction, you keep craving something which is harder and gives you a greater sense of excitement, until you reach the point where the pornography only goes so far – that jumping off point where you begin to think maybe actually doing it will give you that which is just beyond reading about it and looking at it.” Towards the end of the interview Bundy says that every single violent offender he had met in prison was a hardcore porn addict.
When Ted Bundy was executed in 1989, in the age before computers and smartphones, hardcore pornography was not easily accessible, whereas today it is part of a “normal” daily diet for some people. Also, the mainstream pornography of today is not the same as the mainstream pornography of the Bundy era. What was once hardcore porn is now considered softcore porn. Mainstream has become extreme.
Sasha Grey and James Deen are the pin-up poster boy and girl of the modern porn world. Grey has even been lauded for transitionining from porn acting to regular television acting and some even say she is a testament to feminine accomplishment. However, both Grey and Deen specialise in hardcore “rapey” pornography, a ‘genre’ which has moved into the mainstream compartment. According to a new Netflix documentary, Hot Girls Wanted, ‘forced blowjob’ scenes have become immensely popular over the past few years. Hot Girls Wanted provides a glimpse into the flourishing amateur porn business in the USA. One of the female performers in the documentary works on a scene that features the highly popular ‘forced blowjob.’ The scene showcases the girl being treated with violence, spat on, and in the denouement she gags and vomits and is then forced to drink her own vomit via sucking it up through a straw.
The ubiquity of the internet in our world today means that we have the opportunity to feast our eyes on anything and everything at any given time of day or night. We can order heroin and crystal meth to our doorsteps from the comfort of our homes and we can watch a woman remove a variety of fruits and vegetables from her anus on the commute to work. There seems to be no limits when it comes to the internet. Pedophiles have access to vast libraries of graphic child abuse online. A budding young psychopath can fuel his mind with videos and images of gruesome executions and mutilated body parts. As for those that delve into the ‘deep web’ they will know that a click of a button is enough to hire an assassin for a murder job.
Indeed the internet is now a necessity and a necessity that gives us so many benefits; educational benefits, information, leisure, business, communications, social benefits and so on. The list of benefits is truly endless, however, could it be possible that the internet is providing us with devastating dangers too?
